The action to remove the counties from the habitat range was the direct result of efforts by Rep. It's been a good year for the fight against valley fever. In July, the FDA approved a new skin test from San Diego-based Nielsen BioSciences Inc. called Spherusol. Previous skin tests fell out of favor because of a high number of false positives, but Spherusol -- which will roll out in phases starting this year -- has been shown to be more reliable.
