Veterans Day is an opportunity for each American to honor the millions of men and women who wore the uniform in sacrifice and service to our country. Our veterans represent the best of this world – courageously defeating tyranny and oppression to protect our freedoms. We are all forever indebted to them, and we should take time to personally thank our local veterans.

Americans are tough consumers. We make sure we don’t get ripped off when we invest our hard earned money towards a significant purchase, like a car. We not only look at the bottom line, but we also scrutinize the breakdown of hidden fees we are asked to pay.

The State Children’s Health Insurance program (SCHIP) in California has helped about 850,000 low-income children in California. That is why I am a proud supporter of renewing SCHIP because helping low-income children receive health care is a value we all should support.

For many of us, the Fourth of July is a celebration of summer - a much needed day of celebration where we head out to enjoy fireworks, fanfare, barbecues, baseball and parades. The anniversary of our nation's birth should include all things celebratory, but should also invoke a sense of gratitude and pride.

This Memorial Day, I join you in honoring and supporting our troops, both past and present, who sacrificed greatly to protect the freedom, prosperity, and peace of mind we enjoy today. Whether observing a moment of silence or attending a tribute to honor our soldiers’ sacrifices, we are a nation that must never forget those who selflessly made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our way of life.

Outrage spread through America when Major League Baseball players were found to have been injecting themselves with steroids, giving some players an unfair advantage over the competition. Fundamentally, the fans felt misled by the performance of those “juiced-up” players, and that hard work alone was not the primary reason for their statistics. Like Major League Baseball steroid use, a similar unfair advantage is taken by California incumbent politicians.
