Vital NAWS China Lake Funding Secured by McCarthy in Appropriations Bills
Today, Congressman Kevin McCarthy lauded provisions in the Conference Reports accompanying the Fiscal Year 2020 Domestic and Defense Appropriations bills, which includes approximately $2.369 billion in military construction funds and $627.459 million in defense appropriations funds to be used to help rebuild Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake as part of earthquake recovery efforts. Together with the authorizations included in the House-passed Conference Report accompanying the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), these bills meet the Navy’s FY20 request for rebuilding China Lake. These funds would allow the Navy to move forward with major construction efforts at China Lake. Additionally, this bill would fund the Navy’s FY21 military construction funding request as well, which is $1.216 billion.
“Having seen the damage caused by this summer’s earthquakes firsthand, I understand not only how deeply this funding is needed, but how profound a positive impact it will have on the base, all of its employees, and our defense community as a whole,” said McCarthy. “China Lake is essential to our military’s weapons development and research, and our national security is improved with NAWS China Lake’s success. This bill demonstrates substantial progress in returning China Lake to fully operational status, and I urge President Trump to immediately sign this legislation into law after it is approved by Congress.”
- In order to construct major defense facilities, authorization and appropriations are needed by Congress. Last week, the House-passed the NDAA, which included authorization for seven different projects associated with China Lake earthquake recovery, totaling $1.152 billion. This week, the House is expected to consider China Lake funding as part of the larger appropriations package. These funds would enable China Lake to construct new facilities as authorized by the NDAA if signed into law.
- On December 5, 2019, McCarthy sent a letter signed by Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Cook to House and Senate Appropriations Committee leadership in support of the Navy’s request for FY20 earthquake recovery efforts.
