Statement of Congressman Kevin McCarthy on the President's State of the Nation Address

February 24, 2009

Washington, D.C. – Tonight, Congressman McCarthy issued the following statement after President Obama gave the State of the Nation address to a joint session of Congress:

"I commend the President for his honest and sobering assessment, and stand united in purpose to work with him to produce solutions to move America forward.

"We need to work together as Americans to tackle the very tough economic situation American families and small businesses face today. In these times of record deficits, we should work together to protect hardworking taxpayers with fiscal responsibility, government accountability, and spending transparency. Through smart and targeted policies, we can work to create jobs by nurturing job creating small businesses, which create seventy percent of the jobs in our country.

"We should look to the future, but be mindful of past mistakes. In times of economic downturn, we know we should not raise taxes on families and small businesses that can't afford to pay them. We also should not spend more money that we don't have by simply borrowing more money from foreign countries.

"These are challenging times, but more than ever, this crisis unites us in purpose to solve these problems."

Also, of note, Congressman McCarthy was on the Escort Committee for the President's Address to the Congress.
