Opportunities for High School Students: Service Academy and Congressional Art Competition
I wanted to take a moment to highlight two opportunities for current high school students living in California’s 23rd Congressional District: service academy nominations (due Wednesday October 20, 2021) and the Annual Congressional Art Competition (due THIS Friday, April 23, 2021).
Service Academy Nominations
Due to unprecedented circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am hosting a virtual Service Academy Forum for students of the 23rd Congressional District who are interested in attending one of the U.S. Service Academies. Below are a series of videos detailing different aspects of Service Academy life, where interested prospective applicants can also hear directly from Academy Liaison Officers who represent the U.S. Air Force, Merchant Marines, and Military and Naval Academies.
Appointment to an academy includes a four-year scholarship with a service obligation.

Please note: A congressional nomination is not a guarantee of admission. The final decision to appoint will be made by the service academy itself following the final review of the applicant's medical and academic qualifications by the Service Academy Admission’s Board.

Congressional Art Competition – Due this Friday
High school students from Kern, Tulare, and Los Angeles counties who reside in the 23rd Congressional District are invited to participate in the annual Congressional Art competition by submitting artwork on a wide variety of subjects and mediums. The deadline for submissions is THIS FRIDAY, April 23rd. Entries will be accepted digitally by submitting a high-resolution photo, as well as a photo of a completed release form to: CA23Art@mail.house.gov. The winning entry will be displayed in a corridor leading to the United States Capitol for one year.
The artwork must be an original concept, two dimensional and no larger than 26” x 26” (the measurement should allow for framing) and 4” in depth. Paintings (oil, watercolor, acrylic, etc.), computer generated art, photography, drawings, collages and prints (lithographs, silk screens, monotypes, woodcuts and intaglio methods) are acceptable and should not weigh more than 15 lbs. The student release form must be signed by the teacher, parent or guardian (if the student is not 18) AND the student to certify the originality of each piece. You can find the form here.
Additional awards will be given to those who place first, second, and third in the following three categories: photography, computer generated art, and artwork of all other mediums.
