McCarthy Leads Pro-Life Member Meeting with HHS Secretary Azar
This week, Congressman Kevin McCarthy hosted a meeting with Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar to talk about pro-life issues. During the discussion, McCarthy expressed his concerns regarding California’s abortion mandate which he believes violates the Weldon Amendment.
The Weldon Amendment is a critical Federal law crafted to protect the civil rights of Americans who want to live their lives without being discriminated against by the government simply because they are not willing to provide, pay, or cover abortions. The State of California, however, disregarded this law under the Obama Administration and are forcing health insurance plans to cover abortion. Additional members in attendance included Representatives Robert Aderholt (AL-04), Andy Harris (MD-01), Vicky Hartzler (MO-04), Doug Lamborn (CO-05), Bob Latta (OH-05), Martha Roby (AL-02), and Chris Smith (NJ-04).
Congressman McCarthy released the following statement following their meeting:
“California’s abortion mandate is appalling. These actions not only dehumanize life, but also ignore a Federal law designed to protect important rights and freedoms.
“Unfortunately, the lack of concern for unborn children is not just unique to California. This week, for the 80th time, the Democratic-led House of Representatives blocked legislation that would make it mandatory to provide medical care for children born alive after a botched abortion.
“That is why I am particularly grateful to President Trump and Secretary Azar for their efforts to protect conscience rights and religious liberty and taking a strong stance in supporting and advocating for pro-life policies. I am confident that through their leadership, America’s best days are ahead, and I thank Secretary Azar for taking part in our productive meeting.”
