McCarthy: Democrats Need to Act In the Best Interest of the American People
Washington D.C. – Congressman Kevin McCarthy released the following statement about ongoing discussions to make real spending cuts and keep the government open:
"It's been 44 days since House Republicans passed a serious long-term budget measure to cut spending and keep the government running. Democrats on the Hill and in the White House have put politics before people by refusing to agree to real spending cuts that are critical to getting our economy back on track and reducing our long-term debt.
"This is just more of the same from Democrats who have been arguing for trillions in new tax increases, spending, and debt over the last two years, while refusing to pass or propose a serious spending plan in the Senate that keeps our government operating. Their unwillingness to bring spending under control was reinforced again today with the announcement that U.S. debt has reached an all-time high of $14.27 trillion, forcing Secretary Geithner to ask Congress for an increase in the debt ceiling and pushing our nation to the edge of a fiscal crisis. When will they learn this can't continue?
"Democrats have had their chance to put us back on a path to fiscal sanity and robust job creation and they've failed. It's time for Democrats to stop playing political games with the future of our country and join House Republicans in acting in the best interest of the American people."
