McCarthy: Alternative Health Care Reform Plan Will Lower Costs and Reduce the Deficit

Nov 5, 2009
Press Release

Washington D.C. – Today, Congressman Kevin McCarthy issued the following statement supporting a new 219 page Republican health care reform alternative that actually reduces health insurance premiums to make health insurance more affordable for families struggling to pay for health care and actually reduces the burdening deficit.

“Americans have been asking their Representatives in Washington to listen to them – to control health care costs and to control the record amount of over-spending, over-borrowing and over-taxing.  House Republicans agree, which is why we support a new common-sense health care reform proposal that will actually lower health care costs for Americans and reduce our national deficit.

“Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi continues to ignore the call to work towards common-sense solutions that doesn’t involve a government takeover of health care. I am 100 percent against the Pelosi plan, which increases government bureaucracy with over one hundred new agencies that will have a say over our health care, and costs Americans over a trillion dollars over the next decade.  That is why my colleagues and I are pushing forward this smarter and more reasoned alternative that expands access to affordable health care, which includes those with pre-existing conditions; allows Americans to buy insurance coverage competitively across state lines; and reforms lawsuit abuse.”

The Congressional Budget Office confirmed that this new plan Congressman McCarthy supports could lower health care premiums by up to 10 percent, and reduce the deficit by $68 billion over 10 years, all without imposing burdensome new taxes on American small businesses and hard-working families.  In contrast, Speaker Pelosi’s 1,990 page plan will create $1 trillion in new Federal spending, and includes new hundreds of billions of dollars in new taxes for small businesses, individuals, and families, and makes cuts to Medicare.
