ICYMI: House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy on Fox News' "America's Newsroom"
Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy appeared on Fox News' "America's Newsroom," to discuss the need for a Balanced Budget Amendment.
"Sixteen years ago we were one vote away from having a balanced budget amendment, but next Wednesday we'll have that vote in the house. That would lay a framework to get out of this problem in the long term while we are able to attack spending right now with the debt limit as well."
On the Need for a Balanced Budget Amendment:
"The President has never laid out a plan to get out of this debt problem. He says he's for something, he says he is for entitlement reform, but he cannot tell you one specific thing that he has done. You cannot score it, and that's what's wrong with Washington. The budget gimmicks, the accounting tricks. We have got to stop. That's why next week we'll vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment. The Constitution has been around for more than 223 years and has only been amended twenty-seven times. Sixteen years ago we were one vote away from having a balanced budget amendment, but next Wednesday we'll have that vote in the house. That would lay a framework to get out of this problem in the long term while we are able to attack spending right now with the debt limit as well."
"This administration likes to spend and tax rather than live under what they bring in. It's an uphill battle, but I think it's worth the fight. This country is fighting for. I think that we are at a threshold that we haven't seen in a couple generations. What is the future going to look like, and are we willing to do the tough things so the opportunities will be here for the next generation. Maybe we don't have the votes but I belief the American people believe in it. Why do 49 states either have a balanced budget or some type of statute that they have live under, but the federal government does not? We need some ability supervision."
On Democrats' Demand For Tax Increases:
"We need to focus on job creation, and if you're going to raise taxes on those creating jobs, than you're not going to have any. Look at what this Administration and the Democrats have done. In the last year start-ups in America are at an all time low, lowest in 17 years. In the last growth period in America, small businesses created 7 million new jobs, and big companies cut a million. We need to focus on small business, and this Administration has not. That's the difference between Republicans and Democrats."
"I'm hopeful this administration sees the right path. This is not a revenue problem – It's a spending problem. This is an opportunity for America to right the ship. To cut back on the spending, to put a balanced budget amendment in place, so we are not here 5, 6 years from now. And we get America back on the right track."
