Congressman McCarthy Statement on June Unemployment Numbers

Jul 2, 2009
Press Release

Bakersfield, CA – Today, Congressman Kevin McCarthy issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Labor released its monthly jobs report for June.  The report showed that national unemployment had risen to 9.5% and that another 467,000 jobs were lost in June.

“Today, the Administration reported what many middle class families in our communities are already experiencing – job losses and a looming fear of more job losses.

“Congress cannot keep borrowing and spending money from other countries to pay for more Federal government. Instead Congress should focus on solutions that can grow local small businesses and encourage entrepreneurs.  Small businesses, which create over 70 percent of our nation’s jobs, can fuel our nation’s economic engine and create lasting jobs our communities surely need. We can do this immediately by taking action on the economic growth solutions that my colleagues and I prepared earlier this year.

“As we celebrate our nation’s independence this weekend, let us remember the challenges we have faced before, and the challenges we have overcome. Through smarter economic policies that focus on job creation, we can help overcome our current economic challenges and put America back on a successful path.”
