Murray Middle School groundbreaking
A groundbreaking ceremony that included Senate Republican Leader Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) was held Monday to commemorate the beginning of construction that will result in a new campus for students attending Murray Middle School and the modernization of Burroughs High School.
As a result of a collaborative effort between state and federal agencies, many middle and high school students in the Sierra Sands Unified School District will have new and renovated learning facilities in the not-too-distant future. The construction at the two schools was the result of the district qualifying for a Department of Defense School Construction Grant. In 2015, Senator Fuller authored Senate Bill 111 to assist 11 public schools on or near military installations in California who have qualified for Department of Defense School Construction Grants help obtain a 20 percent state funding match.
“All children deserve a quality education, including children going to schools near military installations. This groundbreaking ceremony is the end of a long process that began in 2010. Here in the Indian Wells Valley, the end result will be a wonderful opportunity to enhance an already robust educational program,” said Fuller. “As someone who dedicated more than 30 years of my life to education, I’m so proud that these children will no longer be shortchanged and will soon have a wonderful, updated, safe, and technologically-advanced environment to learn and grow.”
“Just last week, we were reminded by the Secretary of Defense of our community’s unique role in leading the future of our country with world-class research and development. That same commitment to excellence must be represented with the education of our next generation. Today’s groundbreaking is the first step in establishing a center for learning for our students that reflects the cutting edge advances that our Ridgecrest community is known for. I want to thank Senate Republican Leader Jean Fuller for her hard and persistent work to make this day possible and to prepare our children to lead in the 21st Century,” said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield).
“I applaud the leadership of the Sierra Sands Unified School District, community leaders, and House Majority Leader McCarthy,” said Fuller.
