McCarthy: H.R. 3962 Will Make Things Worse, Not Better for America

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Kevin McCarthy joined a bipartisan group of his colleagues to oppose Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s health care reform bill (H.R. 3962).  39 Democrats joined 176 Republicans in a bipartisan vote to oppose final passage of Speaker Pelosi’s bill. 

Congressman McCarthy issued the following statement in support of commonsense solutions that he and his Republican colleagues offered on the House floor. 

“Unfortunately, one day after we learned that our nation’s unemployment rate has risen above 10% and that more than 2.8 million Americans have lost their jobs since the stimulus was signed into law, Speaker Pelosi pushed through a partisan, $1.3 trillion government takeover of health care bill that includes more than $700 billion in new taxes on hard-working Americans and small businesses. During these challenging economic times of 22 consecutive months of job losses, it is time for strong job-creating leadership. That is why my colleagues and I rejected this job-killing bill and offered a common-sense health care solution that costs significantly less, and could save families up to $5,000 per year in health care premiums. Not only that, because our bill attacks health care costs and lawsuit abuse, it results in significant savings for the government - cutting the deficit by $68 billion.

“We need to fix our health care system, but Speaker Pelosi’s bill is the wrong approach - it will lead to a government takeover of health care and higher premiums for families, and $505 billion in cuts to Medicare. That is why the overwhelmingly bipartisan vote was to reject Speaker Pelosi’s health care bill and in favor of a better approach.”
